Long Term Focus
We’re not focused on short-term solutions, but are seeking outstanding long-term returns on our investments. What does this mean? It means that we track lots of data: How healthy are the relationships our children have with their family members? How are our children doing in school? What happens after our program participants graduate? We are deeply committed to making sure that all of the funds spent on our children help them become mature, independent, generous adults with skills and jobs. And we do this for the lowest cost possible.
How do we measure our success? By tracking the employment of our alumni, as well as their continued support of RTC. RTC draws connections between the great local resources already embedded in African communities. We invest heavily in education, breaking the bottleneck of poor education in these communities in order to achieve transforming outcomes for orphans and vulnerable children. RTC seeks to reduce waste and boost return on your social investment by partnering with people and institutions that can deliver outcomes.
After 4 years of operation we are poised to achieve more than 50% university admission rates for our young people. We expect to achieve even higher rates of job placement. This in a country where less than 10% of black students go to a university and where 60% of adults are not working.
An example of the results of our program is seen through Lindiwe’s story:
1. Lindiwe Mputle lost her mother a few years ago. A family from Lindiwe’s church decided to take her in.
2. We sent Lindiwe to a private school in her new community of Randfontein, expending very little in the way of resource to get her there.
3. Lindiwe passed the high school exit exam in 2011. We then helped her enroll in Life Healthcare’s nurse training program.
4. Life Healthcare is the largest private school operator in South Africa. They can’t find enough nurses so they are training 1,300 of them in their own school. Lindiwe is being paid more than $500/month to study full time to become a registered nurse in 4 years. Upon graduation she is guaranteed a job working in a Life Healthcare facility for $2,000/month.
Today we spend about $2,500 per scholar per year. We are achieving a university admission rate of better than 50% versus a national average of less than 5% for blacks, this after only 4 years of operation. Our long-term job placement rates are even higher.
Raise the Children International (RTC) is a not-for-profit corporation and is organized exclusively for any purposes for which an organization may be exempt from federal taxation under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, including for such purposes the making of distributions to organizations that qualify as exempt organizations under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. RTC was registered as non-profit corporation in 2008 in the state of New Hampshire.
